Winner of the 2009 Chrysalis Award for best kitchen, the design challenge for this existing residence was to get a lot of stuff in a little space. The owner requested the kitchen remodel include space for a stacked washer and dryer with storage cabinet, and island with sink, refrigerator, cook wall, and small dining area. The solution was to use one wall to capture tall items such as the refrigerator, washer and dryer, and storage, and open up a wall to the existing enclosed porch, which became an area for a built-in-bench and dining table. Doing this freed up enough floor space to allow for the island in the center of the room. The client also requested that the remodel would maintain the characteristics of the original house. Integrating shallow storage below the window into the existing wainscot to look as it had always been there, as well as designing the built-in-bench to physically and stylistically tie into the wainscot achieved this. The new design gives a tailored look to the kitchen, which extends the overall feel of the home. The new built-ins maintain the character of the original cottage style home and the tile floor adds a clean timeless element to the kitchen.
