The goal of this project was to create a weekend lake house that met the needs of a growing family seeking retreat from busy city life. We started by recommending a low-maintenance exterior. We designed a three-foot bracketed overhang to protect the exterior from the majority of rain, which also eliminated gutters and lowered upkeep costs. The weekend lake house was also fitted with a garden/entertainment area on its south side which blocks the wind, allowing for three-season use. On the northern side, trees shade the side deck in the summer. Inside, we created multifunctional spaces using standard, no-frills materials in creative ways. For the great room, we used gang-stacked standard-sized windows with extended overhangs. The large brackets shade the west-facing lakeside windows in summer months, while in winter, after the leaves fall, the great room is warmed by the sun. The design met the needs of the owner, the process assured a productive experience. And the end result is a great place to get away.
