Located on a peninsula in a quiet area on the lake, the land still holds 2 original stone chimneys that belonged to the original site’s cabin. The design of the home started around the larger of the 2 chimneys and in an attempt to preserve the historical aspect of the site and provide visitors with a unique  story and experience, we decided to let the chimney be the start of the design. From the start of the entry drive into the site, visitors are on axis with the chimney and begin to experience it first thing. As they arrive closer to the home and walk towards the front door, the chimney greets themas they walk past  small intimate garden and patio space towards the door. The site will also feature several walking paths to various hang out on the site including the sunset peak patio, a bocce ball court game area, and a boat house.

Opening up the home to the 180 degree views was also a very important feature of the home. Corner windows open rooms up and provide stunning close range and long range views in all rooms of the house.

The location of this chimney was important in the initial design and came to be a focal point on axis with the entry drive. We proposed creating a small intimate garden and sitting area seen as guests first arrive to the house. A steep front yard gave the team the challenge to create a welcoming entry and yard space, without massive retaining walls at the street. Adding a new screened porch on the rear and grading the steep backyard allowed the opportunity for a better connection to the deep backyard. By building a new second level built into a new taller roof line, we are adding two kids bedrooms with a shared bath, a playroom, and a new master suite, doubling the size of the home without having it lose it’s bungalow character.

The renovation includes adding a second story and a re-organization to the first level to allow for a Mother-in-Law Suite and anopen living space that opens up the home up to the woods at the rear. The design is clean and simple and uses natural materials giving the home a warm feel while updating the ranch style.

A southern facing front porch orients the house towards the corner and creates a side entry porch from the east facade similar to a Charleston home. A tight budget led to a simple plan composed of 2 forms that takes into account conventional lumber dimensions to minimize construction waste and account for every square inch.

This Lifetime Home features a designated area for a future elevator, planned rooms for future kids, multi-use rooms that can function as an office or guest bedroom, and several other “Not so Big House” ideas  to maximize spatial impact of such a small home. The new Teen Center is composed of a 3000 square foot 2 level addition which filled in an existing courtyard, and an interior renovation of an additional 5000 square feet of the original 1960′s building.

]]> http://www.jonespierce.com/boys-and-girls-club-renovation-progress/feed/ 0 Dunwoody Ranch Project Complete http://www.jonespierce.com/dunwoody-ranch-project/ http://www.jonespierce.com/dunwoody-ranch-project/#comments Thu, 24 Nov 2011 18:17:09 +0000 Jones Pierce http://www.jonespierce.com/?p=4844 A Dunwoody Ranch gets a front yard facelift when a new entry and courtyard takes cues from Japanese Zen gardens while maintaining handicapped accessibility.  From the approach the transformation begins at the new exposed aggregate driveway which gets interrupted by radiating bands of sandstone finished concrete whose axis are centered on one embedded flagstone paver.  From there the new frosted glass garage door and timber pergola with plantings add another layer of dimension and interest to what was once a dimly painted wood door.

 

The beautiful existing Japaniese Maple set the backdrop for this simple update to a Ranch. Detail of the Ipe siding and new metal window and door system at the entry. Detail view of the new hardscaping, landscaping, and pergola at the new garage door. For this project we wanted to use simple and clean materials that blend well with the existing brick of the home. A quick walk across a narrow on grade path simulating a bridge over a dry creek bed brings you to a front yard outdoor sitting area carved into the grade.  Existing hardwoods and the owner’s mature Japanese maple set the backdrop for this mostly-secluded area.  Lastly the inside of the existing residence melds with its new view and all glass front door and flanking sidelights opening onto a bluestone porch.  Wide steps provide a gracious entry and the final link between inside and outside while a disguised ramp preserve the owner’s wheelchair access to fully utilize the garden.
